Yea I think its kind of a nickname like Fed, I think the name gman in general not just this game originated to describe someone from the FBI but im talking out of my ass. In THE gmans case he seems more of a spiritual figure than anything else rather than an actual government agent although it is possible that he could work for a different government than Dr. Breens. Also Ive heard that gman can also describe a professional business man whos work is very important such as government work or any other of great importance

it is not fully known y, but in the first half-life game, it is suspect that "gman" is short for government man... but kno one really knows
